Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival in Zanzibar — Stone Town
Arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and transfer to Stone Town (15 minutes). Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow alleyways, ornate carved wooden doors, bustling spice markets, and centuries of layered Swahili, Arab, Persian, and Indian culture. Check in to your riad or boutique hotel in the old town. Afternoon walking tour of Stone Town: the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the slave market memorial, and the evening Forodhani Night Market where local cooks serve fresh seafood and Zanzibar pizza by the waterfront. Dinner on the seafront.
Stone Town — Spice Farm Tour & Jozani Forest
Morning spice farm tour — Zanzibar was historically the world's largest clove producer, and its interior is still covered in spice plantations. Walk through groves of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, lemongrass, and exotic fruits. Taste and smell everything. After lunch, drive to Jozani Forest — Zanzibar's only national park and the last refuge of the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth. The friendly troops forage close to the forest path. Arrive at your beach hotel on the east or north coast for check-in. Sunset on the beach.
Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll
Full day snorkelling or diving excursion to Mnemba Atoll, a protected marine reserve off the north-east coast and widely considered one of the best dive sites in East Africa. The atoll is home to hawksbill and green sea turtles, dolphin pods, parrotfish, moray eels, giant grouper, octopus, and reef sharks. Two snorkelling sites covered on the boat trip, with lunch on board. Mnemba is also an exclusive private island — one of Zanzibar's most prestigious stay options if you'd like an upgrade. Return to beach hotel late afternoon.
Beach Day & Sunset Dhow Cruise
A free morning on the beach — swim, kayak, or take a stand-up paddleboard lesson. The north-west coast (Nungwi and Kendwa) faces protected waters and has calm swimming year-round. The east coast (Paje) catches reliable Indian Ocean trade winds, making it East Africa's kitesurfing capital. Afternoon transfer to a dhow boat for a classic Zanzibar sunset dhow cruise — sailing the Indian Ocean on a traditional Arab sailing vessel with sundowners, fresh seafood, and the Stone Town silhouette at dusk. Return for dinner.
Dolphin Tour at Kizimkazi & Free Afternoon
Early morning transfer to Kizimkazi on the south-west coast for a dolphin tour. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins live in these waters year-round and can often be swum with in the open ocean (conditions permitting). The ancient Kizimkazi mosque — with its 12th-century Kufic inscriptions — is one of the oldest mosques in East Africa and worth a brief visit nearby. Return to your hotel by midday. Free afternoon to explore — optional deep-sea fishing, kitesurfing lesson, or a visit to the Rock Restaurant at low tide (Zanzibar's most photographed eatery, built on a coral rock offshore). Dinner at a beachside restaurant.
Final Beach Morning — Departure
A final morning on the beach or in the pool. Light breakfast and check-out at your leisure. Transfer to Zanzibar International Airport for your departure flight — either directly international or via Dar es Salaam. Alternatively, continue your adventure with a Tanzania mainland safari or an onward connection to Nairobi.
