Why Visit Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara is where the safari legend was born. Stretching across 1,510 square kilometres of open savanna in southwestern Kenya, the Mara connects seamlessly to Tanzania's Serengeti to form one of the world's greatest ecosystems. The reserve is home to extraordinary concentrations of predators — lion prides that can number 30 or more, cheetah families that hunt openly on the plains, and leopards that drape themselves across acacia branches in plain sight. From July to October, the Mara becomes the stage for the Great Migration: over 1.5 million wildebeest pour across the Mara River from Tanzania in one of nature's most dramatic spectacles. Nile crocodiles wait in the water. The banks are lined with thundering hooves. It is one of the most powerful wildlife experiences on Earth — and the Mara delivers it reliably, year after year.

Travel Tips for Masai Mara National Reserve

  • 💡Stay in a private conservancy for exclusive, uncrowded game drives — well worth the premium
  • 💡Book 12–18 months ahead for peak migration season (Aug–Sep)
  • 💡Fly from Nairobi's Wilson Airport in 1 hour rather than the 5–6 hour road drive
  • 💡Conservancy fees ($80–$120/day) are additional to the reserve entry fee ($80/day)
  • 💡Pack warm layers — Mara mornings are cold (10–15°C) even in peak season
  • 💡A telephoto lens of 300mm or longer makes a significant difference for photography
