Kenya Safari from the Netherlands: Complete 2026 Travel Guide
Kenya is one of the most popular safari destinations among Dutch travellers — and for good reason. The country offers the Big Five, the iconic Great Migration, stunning landscapes, and a warm, welcoming culture that makes every first-time visitor feel instantly at home.
Soul Tours Africa was founded by Vivian Mutindi, a Kenya-born safari expert who is deeply connected to both Kenya and the Netherlands. She understands exactly what Dutch travellers need: clear information, reliable communication in English (and Dutch when needed), and a safari experience that is genuine — not manufactured for tourists.
This guide covers everything Dutch travellers need to know to plan their Kenya safari in 2026.
Getting from the Netherlands to Kenya
Flights from Amsterdam to Nairobi
The most convenient departure point from the Netherlands is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). From there:
- KLM operates direct flights to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) — approximately 8.5 to 9 hours
- Ethiopian Airlines connects via Addis Ababa — total journey time around 12 hours, often at lower fares
- Kenya Airways connects via various hubs — good reliability and competitive pricing
- Turkish Airlines via Istanbul — popular budget option with good service
Return flights from Amsterdam to Nairobi typically cost €600–1,200 per person depending on season and how early you book. Peak season (July–October) is more expensive.
Time difference: Kenya is 2 hours ahead of the Netherlands (CET) in winter and 1 hour ahead in summer (CEST). No significant jet lag adjustment is needed.
Visa Requirements for Dutch Citizens
Dutch citizens need a Kenya e-visa to enter the country. The application is straightforward:
- Apply online at evisa.go.ke
- Cost: $50 USD for a single-entry tourist visa
- Processing time: 3–5 business days
- Valid for 90 days from date of issue, allowing 30 days stay per entry
We send all Dutch clients a step-by-step visa application guide after booking. It takes about 15 minutes to complete.
The Best Kenya Safari Parks for Dutch Travellers
Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara is Kenya's most famous wildlife reserve and the destination most Dutch travellers put at the top of their list. The open savanna grasslands provide exceptional visibility — you are almost guaranteed to spot lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, and giraffes on every game drive.
From July to October, the Great Migration brings over 1.5 million wildebeest into the Mara from Tanzania, including the famous Mara River crossings. It is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on the planet.
Best for: Big Five, Great Migration, first-time safari, couples, families.
Amboseli National Park
Amboseli offers one of Africa's most iconic views: vast elephant herds moving across the plains against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is smaller and more intimate than the Mara, making it a wonderful two-night addition to any Kenya itinerary.
Best for: Elephant lovers, photographers, Kilimanjaro views.
Tsavo East and West National Parks
Less visited than the Mara, the vast Tsavo parks offer a wilder, more authentic safari experience with the famous red elephants of Tsavo. Conveniently located between Nairobi and the coast, Tsavo pairs perfectly with a beach extension in Mombasa or Diani.
Best for: Adventurous travellers, combining safari with the Kenyan coast.

Health Requirements for Dutch Travellers
Vaccinations
The Netherlands' RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu) recommends the following for Kenya:
- Yellow fever — Required if arriving from a yellow fever risk country; recommended for all travellers
- Hepatitis A — Strongly recommended
- Typhoid — Recommended
- DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio) — Up to date
Consult your GP or a travel health clinic (reisclinic) at least 6 weeks before departure.
Malaria Prevention
Malaria is present in most of Kenya, including safari areas. Most Dutch travellers take Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) — start 1–2 days before arrival, continue for 7 days after return. Mosquito repellent and long sleeves for evenings are also recommended.

Packing Tips for Dutch Travellers on Kenya Safari
Packing for a Kenya safari from the Netherlands requires a bit of thought — you are moving from a temperate European climate to equatorial Africa.
What to bring:
- Safari clothes in neutral colours — khaki, olive, tan, and grey. Avoid dark blue and black (attracts tsetse flies in some areas). Bright colours are fine for evenings at the lodge.
- Lightweight long sleeves — essential for mosquito protection in the evenings. Merino wool base layers are ideal for cool Mara mornings.
- A good fleece or light jacket — mornings in the Masai Mara can be surprisingly cold (10–15°C), especially on open-air game drives from January to March.
- Comfortable walking shoes — for camp walks and bush excursions.
- Binoculars — a good pair significantly improves every game drive. 8x42 or 10x42 are ideal. Borrow from the lodge if you do not have your own.
- Power adaptor — Kenya uses UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G). The Netherlands uses Type C/F (Europlug). Bring a universal adaptor.
- Durable sunscreen (SPF 50+) — the equatorial sun at altitude is much stronger than in the Netherlands. Apply generously on open-air game drives.
- Dust-proof camera bag — Kenyan tracks are often dirt roads and dust can damage camera equipment. A sealed bag protects your gear.
- Refillable water bottle — most lodges provide filtered water. Reduces plastic waste and saves money.
What NOT to bring:
- Camouflage patterns — illegal for civilians in Kenya
- Heavy luggage — charter flights between parks have a strict 15 kg soft bag limit (no hard suitcases). Many Dutch travellers are caught out by this; check with us before packing.
